Outdoor Recreation Program

Building Community through Recreation

Our Outdoor Recreation Program gives veterans a chance to get outside, recharge, and share in the enjoyment of the outdoors with other warriors.

In partnership with Prisma Health Roger C. Peace, we offer biking and hiking adventures, as well as whitewater rafting, kayaking, zip-lining, snow tubing, snowboarding and many more free to veterans. All skill levels are welcome, and family events are also available.

The only requirement to participate is to complete the UWS Intake Form and provide UWS with a copy of your military ID, VA ID, or DD214.

No alcohol or guns are permitted on any Outdoor Recreation.

ROGER C. PEACE RECREATIONAL THERAPY

Roger C. Peace offers recreational therapy for veterans that includes snow and water sports, sled hockey, adaptive sports, and many other fun and challenging events year-round that are tailored for veterans’ needs. One-on-one recreational therapy is also available for veterans.

WILDERNESS WARRIOR FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The purpose of the Wilderness Warrior Fellowship Program (WWFP) is to introduce veterans to the work of the United States Forestry Service (USFS) at the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming each year. Warriors are trained by Blackrock Ranger Station personnel and work alongside them to maintain access to the wilderness trails in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Training during this two-week-long excursion includes horsemanship and the use of traditional forestry tools including axes and two-man saws. Upon completion of the program, warriors become certified sawyers.

If you are a veteran interested in experiencing the wilderness of Wyoming, connecting with likeminded warriors, and serving our country through forestry work, please email us to learn more about our next Wilderness Warrior adventure! Also, please contact us if you would like to help sponsor this annual program.

WARRIOR EXPEDITIONS

In 1948, Earl Shaffer told a friend he was going to “walk off the war” to work out the sights, sounds, and losses of World War II. Four months later, Earl Shaffer became the first person to hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Veterans are geared up and resupplied as they hike the entire Appalachian Trail or paddle a kayak down the Mississippi River. This program is designed for the recently returned combat veterans who are looking for the most extreme adventures.
