UWS Official Statement on the Death of Army Veteran Charlie Pannell
Upstate Warrior Solution (UWS) is saddened this week by the loss of one of our own. Staff Sergeant Charles “Charlie” Pannell, USA, Retired, served for twelve years and deployed to Iraq three times. On his last deployment in Mosul, Iraq, he was on patrol with his platoon when they were attacked by insurgents with grenades. He was severely injured and spent the next year in Walter Reed hospital, going through over one hundred surgeries and losing his left leg above the knee. In 2013, Charlie found his next and final mission in life – assisting other warriors in need through Upstate Warrior Solution. Charlie grew up in Anderson and moved back to his community in order to serve those who have also served, his brothers and sisters in arms. UWS Executive Director Charlie Hall stated, “Charlie Pannell served with distinction as an active duty soldier in the US Army and was injured in combat in Iraq. Over the past two years, Charlie has served our Upstate South Carolina warriors and their families first as a volunteer, and then on the UWS staff as an Outreach Specialist. He used his own experiences and challenges to reach other veterans in his community in order to be a catalyst for their growth and development as members of this community. Charlie, his wife Bethany, and their three children have been and continue to be a special part of the Upstate Warrior Solution team.” Charlie will be missed tremendously by the UWS family.
