Gold Star Mothers Day

Gold Star Mothers Day

This week is Gold Star Mothers Week, and today is Gold Star Mother’s Day! Gold Star Mother’s Day is observed on the last Sunday in September. Gold Star Mother’s Day is intended to recognize and honor those mothers who have lost a son or daughter in the service of the U.S. Armed Forces. Symbolically, the gold star is to recognize a loved one lost in combat as a blue star is for those who are serving.

According to an article on the Military Benefits website, the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., a nonprofit organization, has been established for Gold Star Families since 1928. Their mission is to educate, remember, and inspire “true allegiance to the United States of America” as well as offer “needful assistance to all Gold Star Mothers and their descendants. They hold conventions on Gold Star Mothers Day and Veterans Day in addition to partnering with Wreaths Across America in December.

Our Family Services Advocate Virginia Barnes is now a friend of Upstate SC Gold Star Mothers and is partnering with their President Debby Whitsitt to revitalize the Chapter. If you are a Gold Star Mother and are interested in running for the position of Secretary, please contact Virginia.
“The times I have spent with Virginia have been times of encouragement and learning. She is wise, knowledgeable, and compassionate. She is an excellent support to me as I move forward in my own life. Virginia makes me feel like I am not alone. She is right there alongside me, revitalizing Upstate SC Gold Star Mothers. This is appreciated beyond measure.” – Debby Whitsitt, Upstate SC Gold Star Mothers President
