“As part of its COVID-19 response in early March, our UWS team committed to conducting wellness checks on more than 7,000 veterans in its network.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of those calls put UWS Warrior Advocate Lauren O’Dell in touch with Army veteran Vincent P., who served in the late ’80s. Vincent originally connected to UWS by the Spartanburg VA in 2016 for housing assistance.
Through their conversation, Lauren learned that Vincent had been furloughed due to the coronavirus outbreak and was unable to pay his rent.

Lauren helped him apply for the COVID-19 emergency relief fund provided by the grant from Premier Foundation. Vincent was approved for assistance, and UWS is currently coordinating the direct payment of his rent.
For veterans like Vincent who have experienced housing instability in the past, the financial difficulties brought on by the COVID-19 health crisis could set them back to square one.
